April 1, 2019, Aptos CA
Friends,

Some of you may remember that last year we were approached by HTGV to create a new series called "Forever Seniors." Here's an update.

Last spring, we produced a 15-minute demo show. The feedback is not what we expected. First, the HTGV producer loved the concept of seniors downsizing in their Golden Years. But, she wanted too many changes. She had no suggestions for Terri and Jen, but the story was different for Buddy and me. For example, the producer wanted me to grow a beard and wanted to replace Buddy with an Australian Ridgeback. These conditions were dealbreakers, so we decided to terminate the process before we invested more time.

Then in November, Chip and Joanna Gaines of "Fixer Upper" announced they were starting a new home improvement channel. We contacted them with our concept. I would be the Executive Producer/Project Manager. Terri would be the Designer and Jen the small job handywoman and parental peacekeeper. Buddy would be responsible for our social media presence and serve as a bodyguard. The show would be based in Santa Cruz. We renamed the show "Forever Young".

In January, we flew to Waco Texas to meet the Gaines'. We spent most of the time with their TV programming executives. We did enjoy a 30-minute face-to-face with Chip and Joanna. They were generally nice people. Buddy especially enjoyed Chip's antics. Who wouldn't like two people revered by Cher, JLo and Brandon McMillan, star of CBS' Lucky Dog.

Currently, we are waiting to hear from them. Buddy is working his tail off, hounding the producers for an answer and making sure we aren't barking up the wrong tree.

April 1, 2018

Great news.

Terri and I have been contacted by a producer from HTVG. She wants us to shoot a pilot for a home improvement show targeted to seniors on the move. I asked her how she found us and she said they used deep learning on Facebook and our name was selected from millions of seniors.
A tentative title for the show is Forever Seniors. The show will follow seniors moving from their longtime homes to their forever home. The show will include picking a location, a home, and the big move. There will be an advice section about how important it is to have at least 6 web cameras, hacks for python and C++ as well as suggestions to pet owners, given by Buddy. Terri will cover the interactions, both good and bad, between the spouses during this time of stress.

Think of it as a cross between "Fixer Upper" and "A Dogs Purpose". Buddy will narrate each show giving his perspective on why humans act the way they do on and off camera. The pilot will be shot in Aptos, California. The first episode will be about our move from Ballston Lake to Aptos.

Stay tuned for a showing date for the pilot, expected sometime near April 1, 2019. If all goes well we expect a BBC spin-off in 2020, hosted by Pete and Pat Warwick and their dog Poppy.

April 1, 2016

Friends,
Many of you know that for the past ten years, I have been actively working to limit overdevelopment of marginal lands in Clifton Park, New York. I was one of the founders of FOLK, Friends of the Longkill Forest. I continue to advocate for responsible development in the towns of Clifton Park, Ballston, and Round Lake.

Today, April 1, 2016, I announce my candidacy to run for Clifton Park Town Supervisor in November. I will run as an independent with endorsements from FOLK, PMGL, LHS, PiKA, VTK, ITK, LYMB, IGFES, OSCAR, and IEEE Visualization. I will be financing my campaign. Soon you will be able to visit my campaign website: billlorensenforcliftonparktownsupervisor.com or blfcpts.com. On that website, you will see my positions on subdivisions (both interpolation and approximation), surface versus volume rendering, software quality, open source and reducing over triangulation of surfaces.

I am confident that my opposition will have no idea how to address these topics. My campaign manager "Buddy" Lorensen, has promised to work like a dog to get me elected. "A vote for Bill is a vote for Bill."

Mar 31, 2015 10:32pm
News: Noware Announces Santa Cruz Office, April 1, 2015

BillsBasement, the only-owned and wholly-owned subsidiary of noware.com, announces the opening of the Santa Cruz California office.

Bill Lorensen, Chairman, CEO, CFO, CTO, CBO, and founder announced today that Noware has opened an office on the Westside of Santa Cruz, CA. The office will be open each year during March. The East Coast office, located in Ballston Lake, New York will be shut down during March.

Lorensen said, "the winters in upstate New York do not motivate our small software development team. Although snow clearing technology has improved, the numerous days below freezing are depressing, and the weather affects staff productivity. Santa Cruz offers great ocean views, the San Jose Mercury News and numerous unique geocaching opportunities".

In April 2014, Kitware, a Halfmoon, New York open source software company, tried to acquire Noware. Unfortunately, the terms of the acquisition, "lifetime membership to the Beer of the Month Club" were never honored.

Noware is a figment of Lorensen's imagination. Noware supports open source projects including Slicer, VTK, ITK, and the Open Atlas Project. Noware is funded by the United States Social Security Adminstration and the GE Pension Fund.
Will Schroeder, President, and CEO of Kitware issued the following statement: "For years, BillsBasement has been a PIA about software quality and API backward compatibility of the Insight Toolkit (ITK) and the Visualization Toolkit (VTK). Kitware and the community that supports ITK and VTK cannot afford the increased expenses to maintain quality software and backward compatibility. We had hopes that BillsBasement would stop these practices after its sole employee retired, but BillsBasement continues to promote these practices actively. We had to act before these ideas spread to other open source projects."

Bill Lorensen, an unpaid intern in BillsBasement responded: "I have fought for software quality and backward compatibility for years. With few allies, I have no choice but to accept the hostile offer and focus my activities on improving my golf game and expanding my geocaching activities."

Terms of the takeover have not been disclosed, but there are rumors that a lifetime membership to the Beer of the Month Club finalized the negotiations".

Working for a Friend

Bill Lorensen

December 2018

In my forty-year career, I've only had six managers. Of those 6, I consider 5 of them as friends. Not friends as Facebook friends, but real friends. What makes a real friend? A real friend is someone you enjoy being with. Real friends trust you and you trust them, they have your back, and you have their back. You know a lot about your real friends; their family, their interests, their strengths and weaknesses. And real friends know everything about you. Most people may have an occasional manager they consider a friend, but I wager my friend to manager ratio is unusually high.

Here are my managers that became friends, or in one case, a friend became my manager. I'll use first names, to protect the innocent. I apologize for incorrect time-lines. I'm doing this from memory, after all, that is what a memoir is all about.

Bob 1963-1964

My junior year in high school was the time to get a summer job. I interviewed for a dishwasher job at a local Dairy Barn. The manager, Bob, decided I was an excellent candidate to fill his short order cook opening. My only cooking experience was obtaining a Boy Scout Cooking Merit Badge. Bob and I bonded immediately. He was a good and patient teacher, and I was a quick, enthusiastic student. He soon gave me more and more responsibility. I met his wife Joan and attended several out-of-work functions. When Bob was fired by management, I refused to take over his job on a temporary basis. He was my friend. And I had his back.

Jim 1967-1978

My first computer job was in the summer of my Senior year in college. I took a job in the Maggs Research Center at Watervliet Arsenal. Jim was my boss, and we bonded immediately. Jim's group benefited from his fatherly approach to management, something only possible in a government job. We called him "Big Daddy."

After graduation, I joined Jim's group and spent the next ten years working in the nascent field of computer graphics. Jim encouraged me, essentially giving me free rein. Outside of work, I met his wife Joan and their children. In addition to his "day job," Jim owned a small farm and raised beef cattle. I helped Jim build a pole barn along with other work colleagues and Jim's friends. Each summer we had a big picnic on Jim's large front lawn. The kids enjoyed Jim's farm animals and the overall adventures to be found on a farm.

After the Vietnam War ended, the size of the research lab at the Arsenal was quickly reduced through a series of RIF's (Reductions in Force). Unbeknown to me, I was targeted to be laid off. The selection process was based on seniority and job description. My job title was Research Mathematician. I shared this job description with a physicist in the Lab. Of course, our actual jobs had little in common. The job description was vague. Somehow, Jim was able to change my job description so that it was unique. Jim saved my job. All of this took place without my knowledge. Jim had my back.

In 1977, I interviewed for a job at GE Research. The long-term future of research at the Arsenal was not good. The GE opportunity offered exciting new applications (other than building weapons), and the GE Lab had an excellent reputation. My interview at GE went well, and they indicated I would be getting an offer soon. I went to Jim's house on a Sunday afternoon and told him of my impending move. This was a sad moment, telling your friend you were moving on. It turned out I did not get an offer at that time because of some funding issues at GE.

For the next few months, Jim never mentioned our Sunday meeting. He never asked why I was still in his group. I think he was hoping I would stay. A few months later, I did receive an offer and left Jim's group. We remained friends for many years.

Vince 1978-1987

Changing jobs after ten years was a terrifying experience. I was leaving a job that some of us called OJTR, On The Job Training for Retirement. The group I joined at GE was the central computing group, called CS&S, Computer Systems and Services. CS&S provided GE researchers with computer services and scientific programming. GE hired me because of my expertise in finite element modeling and computer graphics. I hit the ground running, filling a technology void that GE researchers requested. Vince was my manager, and from the beginning, I realized that he was there to help the customers and to help me. Vince lacked the selfish attitude that many managers have in their quest to advance themselves, often at the expense of their employees. He helped me navigate an environment that was vastly different from my government job.

The manager of CS&S (we called him Ham Bone) had created a collegial environment. We had frequent social events, including a large summer picnic, attended by most of the CS&S staff and their families.

Vince's management style was to suggest what to do rather than mandate what to do. His suggestions were always well thought out. I always appreciated his input and followed most of his thoughtful comments. In a short time, we became friends outside of work. Our families enjoyed getting together. Vince and his wife Marilyn had three children. Terri and I had two children in similar age groups. We both enjoyed the race track and fishing.

Vince left GE in early 1987, but we stayed in close contact, and our friendship grew stronger. After I retired, Vince and I spent more time together, playing golf weekly. Today, I consider Vince, my best friend. He still offers advice, and I still take it. We trust each other with details of our lives that few others know. We defend each other when one of us receives unjust criticism. We have each other's backs.

Recently, Vince advised us on our home search in Santa Cruz. I sent him links to houses that piqued our interest. Vince's advice: "think one story." We almost ignored his advise, but fortunately, that deal fell through. We ended up in a one story ranch-style house, similar to the home we left (but much smaller and more expensive of course). Like a true friend, Vince never says "I told you so."

Vince organized a going way party for us when me moved from the East Coast to the Left Coast. At GE, Vince was famous for his going away speeches, always delivered from IBM punch cards. He came through again with a mixture of serious and funny comments.

Pete 1987-1999

Shortly after Vince left, CS&S was reorganized. Pete became my manager. I had met Pete on my first interview at GE and did some programming work for him when he managed one of the technical groups. Pete had a Ph. D. in Industrial Engineering with some knowledge of computer science. But Pete was quick to learn high-level concepts and how to navigate GE politics. Politics were very important in GE.

Pete had a very comfortable management style. He was never confrontational to his employees. Pete understood that if the group did well, Pete did well. He was also very protective of our group. Eventually, this trait would affect his future at GE.

Pete and I quickly bonded, sharing respect for each other's talents. We were about to depart together on a voyage through a tumultuous reorganization — a journey that required trust and respect.

The Research Center had a new Senior Vice President. CS&S was reorganized to be part of a larger IT organization that included new IBM mainframes, replacing the GE inspired Honeywell computers. Each organization was analyzed. Our small group had been doing more research than service but at low service rates. The management decided that our group should be moved into a technical laboratory, competing for research dollars like the other labs. We became CGSP, the Computer Graphics and Systems Program. At the same time, the funding model for the Research Center changed from 75% assessed funding, 25% business funding to 25%, 75% respectively. Assessed funds were like a research tax on the GE businesses who had limited control over that money. Business funding focused more on future business requirements.

In one instant our group was thrown into the competitive research world with no guaranteed funding and no existing customers. The Senior VP provided some transition funds to get us started. Pete and I hit the road, visiting GE businesses and Government groups, looking for matches to our group's skills. Pete and I took over 35 business trips that year, mainly arranged by Pete who knew the GE businesses. Pete was a master at picking the right business contacts. I was the technology presenter. We were a great team and ended up with our first government contract and a few small business contracts. This funding boot-strapped our small team into a larger, respected team that competed alongside the best groups at the Center.

Pete is the reason I was selected as a Coolidge Fellow in 1990. The Coolidge Award is the highest honor at GE Research. The competition is extraordinary. Pete nominated me, gathered the vast information required and made the critical presentations. This process was secretive, and I did not know I was nominated — the first time I was not selected. But Pete had my back and persisted.

As I wrote earlier, Pete was very protective of our group and made sure we got credit for what we did and also made sure that no other group would compete with us for funding in our areas of expertise. Likewise, we respected the other labs' relationships with their customers.

Another reorganization occurred, just as tumultuous as the last. A new Senior VP of Research arrived, and, as usual, management changes were imminent. Pete's boss was replaced. His replacement was charged with shaking up the organization. Even though our group had achieved recognition and respect within and outside GE, we were to move to the "next level," whatever that was. Soon, Pete was reassigned while a search began for a new replacement.

We remain friends with Pete and his wife, Linda. Linda is the best joke teller I have ever met. She tells jokes with such detail and emotion that draws one into the joke and then delivers the punch-line. Over the years I've tied to retell Linda's jokes, but can never deliver them the way she does.

Cathy 2000-2003

Cathy joined our CS&S group a few years after I joined GE. Cathy had less computer science experience than many of us; her BS degree was in Biology. But Cathy was intelligent, quickly adapting to our heavy coding jobs. She was also great with customers, presenting a less-nerdy presence that many of us suffered from. Cathy worked with new research customers in the Chemistry Lab, a Lab that had been under-served by CS&S. She was a valuable asset for us, but another reorganization offered her an opportunity to advance in the Company.

Cathy left GE to manage a group that was formerly part of GE Aerospace, now part of Lockheed Martin. During her tenure in CS&S, I became very close friends with Cathy and her large family. This friendship started and nurtured long before she became my manager.

After Pete was replaced, I told Cathy about the opening for a new manager. After a lengthy, competitive recruiting process, Cathy, my friend, became my manager.

Cathy was thrown into a maelstrom. Our group's expertise had expanded beyond visualization and algorithms. We had embraced the Company's 6-Sigma initiative and applied it to Software Quality. Our group always had a strong software engineering background. And, from our service days, we were great software developers, probably the best in the Center. Most of the other groups that worked with software took their 6-Sigma projects as a means to satisfy the program requirements. We embraced the initiative and combined our projects into an extreme, quality software process. Eventually, we were told that we took the 6-sigma process too far and it was using too much of our time. We saw it as a necessary part of our work.

Cathy was caught in the middle of wanting us to continue this important work, but pressure from management that wanted us to hold back. The group got to the point of having a "workout" to determine the fate of the group.

I don't know the details of what happened, but I have a feeling that Cathy had my back, and that may have hurt her career.

Cathy and her daughter Veronica are still our friends. We have enjoyed many holiday gatherings at her home. Cathy's dad, Jim, was a lifelong GE employee. I always enjoyed our conversations at Cathy's gatherings.

I respected all of these managers, and they respected me. We had each other's backs in tough times at work and outside work. We enjoyed being together. We remain friends for life.

In the Fall of 2018, I took the course "Short Short Story Bookcamp" offered at Capitola Community Center. The instructor, Victoria M.Johnson, is a professional writer and a filmmaker. One assignment was to write a story from a doll's point of view. Since I didn't have a doll story, I wrote a story from a dog's point of view. This is based on a true memoir I wrote a few years ago, A Boy and His Dogs.

I Love Him, and He Loves Me.

Every morning we walk to the big place he calls school. He hugs me before he enters school, leaving me outside. Then I spend time discovering new smells and places. I love chasing those things that eat nuts and run up tree trunks. They are so fast that I can't catch them. But I still enjoy the chase. Sometimes I get chased by other things or almost get hit by big moving things. I am cautious because I want to see him later.

I love him, and he loves me.

We protect each other from bad people. If some big thing runs at me, he chases it away. And, if something tries to hurt him, I bark and chase it away.

I love him, and he loves me.

At the same time every day I return to school and wait to smell him. I stand and stare at the big place. I wag my tail from side-to-side, and round and round in anticipation. Then I see him, and my tail and ears shoot upward. He greets me with a big hug, a quick tummy rub and we walk to the place where we eat and sleep. He calls this place home.

I love him, and he loves me.

We spend the rest of the day playing. He keeps losing that bright, round thing he calls ball. When I bring it back to him, he throws it away. I bring it back to him, and he throws it again. I guess he likes to see me run and chase things. Chasing his ball is more fun than chasing those nut eaters. We also roll in the grass. I run around and over him. Then we rest.

I love him, and he loves me.

At night, I sleep next to him. I curl up and get as close to him as possible. I hear the same comforting noises I heard before I came to his place. When it gets bright again, I jump down and stare at him. I make a few muffled grunts, and he jumps down. Then he hugs me and gives me a quick tummy rub.

I love him, and he loves me.

One day after he left me at school, I went to the place he calls home. I heard a sound and ran to the door. A big person was trying to get into his home. I didn't know this person's smell, so I barked and bit the big person. The mother, who sometimes feeds me, grabbed me and took me away. "Bad dog, bad dog,"

I love him but where is he? He should protect me.

We stopped, and the mother took me into a place I did not know. I noticed lots of strange smells in this new place. Someone picked me up. I felt a pinch and...

I love him, and he ...
He's not here, but there are lots of dogs, and balls, and nut eaters and smells. I miss him, but I like this new place.

And, I still love him, and I know he still loves me.

In 2007, I retired after 50 years as a Computer Scientist. My wife and I lived our entire lives in Upstate New York, just south of Saratoga Springs. In 1865, Saratoga California was named after our New York Saratoga Springs because the California mineral springs were similar to those in New York.

After retirement, we started to regularly visit our daughter who has lived in Santa Cruz for over twenty years. We rented homes on West Cliff Drive for 4-6 weeks each March/April, shortening the cruel winters we had back East. For special occasions, we would return in September/October for a short stay. One September our son-in-law's band played at the Monterey Jazz Festival.

Californians are fortunate because their shoreline is more accessible to the ordinary citizen than the coast in the North East. The California Coastal Commision regulates private development near the ocean whereas, in the North East, homes and hotels can be built adjacent to the ocean, limiting public access to the shorelines. West Cliff Drive offers a three-mile walk from the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf to Natural Bridges State Beach sharing its interesting formations and vistas with anyone, regardless of social status. Parking, although a challenge, is free.

My Santa Cruz mornings followed a routine that started around 7:30 am. I picked up the brew of the day at Coffeetopia on Mission Street, a Mercury News at the U Liquor Store, then off to my meeting with Eleanor on West Cliff.

Many of the wooden benches on West Cliff are dedicated to individuals, A brief dedication statement and the honoree's name are carved into the back seat of the wooden bench. Eleanor's friends and relatives chose a bench across from the first place we rented in 2007. I imagine this bench was special to her and her family and friends. In subsequent years we stayed at four different homes, all a short distance from Eleanor's bench.

Eleanor's relatives picked a beautiful location. Her bench is close enough to the busy sidewalk to enjoy the passing walkers, talkers, runners, dogs, and folks that keep Santa Cruz weird. Near enough to the ocean to experience the unique vistas of Monterey Bay. Over the years I recognized the regulars, and they sometimes recognized me, the seasonal regular. Some days folks would join me on Eleanor's bench for a quick chat, mostly about the view, the weather and the occasional whale spouts we could see in the distance. No politics, religion or complaining here.

I met one couple who visited their aunt on West Cliff each March. They also had a West Cliff routine, passing Eleanor around 8:00 each morning. On their walk back home they would stop at our bench around 8:30 and talk about the weather, family, our backgrounds and, of course, the unique views of the ocean we shared.

I would read the Mercury News and then sit and enjoy the smells, the views of Monterey Bay and the sounds of the crashing waves on the rocky shore. Each morning the seagulls would glide above the waves on their way to Natural Bridges Beach. The occasional California sea otter would drift on its back above the kelp beds just a few yards from shore. On clear days, I could see the looming towers of the Moss Landing Power Plant. At the far end of the crescent that defines Monterey Bay, I could make out the outline of Pacific Grove, 46 miles away by car, but a mere 25 miles as the seagull flies. I usually stayed at the bench an hour or so, just gazing at the ocean, sometimes as calm as a lake and other times with waves interesting enough to attract the early morning surfers. I imagined the surfers checked the morning surf reports on KPIG before deciding if work would have to wait an hour or two.

As I grew older, I sat on the bench wondering if I would return the next year to visit with Eleanor and the peaceful, idyllic place that West Cliff offered us in the morning. Did Eleanor have similar thoughts, as she gazed across the Bay from her favorite bench?

In January 2018 my wife and I made the big move from our home of 47 years in Upstate New York to Aptos. The temperature was 5F below zero when we left Albany and 61F above zero when we arrived in San Jose. I haven't worked out my daily routine yet. Living in Aptos is like living in paradise. Although I'm ten minutes from Rio Del Mar Beach, I never go there in the mornings. I do stop at Pacific Roasting Company for a coffee and muffin. My Mercury News is delivered to my driveway each morning. My La-Z-Boy recliner is a poor substitute for Eleanor's bench. Occasionally I've returned to visit Eleanor, but the travel time during rush hour is just too long to keep up my old routine.

Thank you, Eleanor, for sharing your bench with me. Perhaps we'll meet someday and share our love for your bench, West Cliff and Santa Cruz.

"The future ain't what it used to be", Yogi Berra

In 1990, I was honored with a GE Coolidge Fellowship, the highest scientific award at the GE Corporate Research and Development Laboratory (CRD). At that point, I had been at GE for 17 years after spending 10 years in the Watervliet Arsenal Research Lab. I had 27 years of experience in computer graphics and software engineering.

In 1995 I was able to spend six months at Stanford as part of my Coolidge Award (see background).

My visit to the Stanford Graphics Lab was a great opportunity to share my experience with the young graduate students and, more importantly, to stimulate and rejuvenate me.

I spent a lot of time interacting with the students and exploring the, then new, Internet. I created a number of web pages at Stanford that were related to the Visible Man, the Visible Woman, and Decimation and Smoothing. The Visible Human web pages were very popular. As a guest at Stanford, I was a bit embarrassed that my Visible Human pages were getting many more internet hits than any other Stanford Graphics Lab pages.

Due, in part to my Internet interests, I met a young Ph.D. student who was working on a new way to search for web pages. At this time, there was Yahoo, which was really an index of web pages, not a search engine. There was Inktomi, a search engine developed at Berkeley, and Altavista. Altavista was a great search engine and dominated most searches on the Internet. This Ph.D. student described how his search engine differed from the simple keyword search of Altavista and Inktomi. His engine ordered the returned searches depending on the "popularity" of the sites. He called the system BackRub.

Here is where my recollection of the details may be fuzzy. I either told this Ph.D. student or thought that I should tell him, "Why waste time on a search engine when we already have Altavista"?

Fast-forward a year. I'm back at GE. A colleague, Chris, comes to my office to ask a question about some new technology. I say, "No problem, we'll look it up on Altavista". Chris says, "You're still using Altavista? I use Google." I check it out and say, "Oh no, not Google".

Backrub was now called Google and the Ph.D. student was Larry Page, co-founder of Google.

So much for using my experience to predict the future...

I never met Eleanor, but I grew close to her over the years.

In 2007, I retired after 40 years as a Computer Scientist. My wife and I lived our entire lives in Upstate New York, just south of Saratoga Springs. In 1865, Saratoga California was named after our New York Saratoga Springs because its mineral springs were similar to those in New York.

After retirement, we started to regularly visit our daughter who has lived in Santa Cruz for over twenty years. We rented homes on West Cliff Drivefor 4-6 weeks each March/April, shortening the cruel winters we had back east.

I imagine this bench was special to her and her friends.

On their walk back home they would stop at our bench around 8:30 and talk about the weather, family, our backgrounds and, of course, the views of the ocean we shared.

I imagined the surfers checked the morning surf reports on KPIG and then decide if work would have to wait an hour or two.

As I grew older, I sat on the bench wondering if I would return the next year to visit with Eleanor and the peaceful, idyllic place that West Cliff offered in the morning. Did Eleanor had similar thoughts, as she gazed across the Bay from her favorite bench?

In January 2018 we made the big move from our home of 47 years in New York to Aptos. Occasionally I've returned to visit Eleanor, but travel time during rush hour is just too long to keep up my old routine.

Thank you, Eleanor, for sharing your bench with me. Perhaps we'll meet someday and share our love for her bench, West Cliff and Santa Cruz.

Government funded software - The Insight Toolkit, ITK was started and is still supported by
NIH National Library of Medicine. The original concept was conceived
by Terry Yoo (a student) and Bill Lorensen while Lorensen was on his Coolidge
sabbatical in 1995. A from-scratch registration and segmentation toolkit that
is still vital after over 10 years. Much of ITK was built with GE Research
technology (object-oriented, extreme programming, pipelines, toolkit
approach). GE Research management supported it in varying degrees over the
years, but never really appreciated its impact.
Key GE Research Players: Jim Miller, Dan Blezek, Bill Lorensen

Extreme Programming - The Visualization and Computer Vision (VCV) group at GE Research was an early adopter and, driven by six sigma, focused on software quality control and distributed software
engineering. The VTK/ITK approach is now used as a model for many scientific and biomedical
software systems. The VTK and ITK quality dashboards still receive
kudos from the open source community. Kitware has enhanced and expanded the software process with a number of tools including cmake, ctest and cdash.
Key GE Research players: Jim Miller, Tim Kelliher, Dan Blezek, Bill Lorensen.

OpenGE - The Visualization and Computer Vision Group at GE Research started this grass roots effort to expose GE software
engineers to modern collaborative tools. We leveraged the then
successful sourceforge.
Key GE Research Players: Jim Miller, Bill Lorensen, Tim Kelliher, Bill Leue, Dan Blezek.

It is interesting that the last four and to some extent OO Modeling,
were all started in the Visualization and Computer Vision (VCV) group, an algorithm versus software group. These were
technologies that we needed to make our algorithmic software easier to
write, maintain and share. The tools and techniques accidentally became useful outside of
the initial domain.

Lorensen:

In 1967 I started a summer job at the US Army Watervliet Arsenal Maggs
Research Center. This was my first job that was related to my training
as a Mathematician at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (the summer before I was a short order cook). The Research Center had an analog
plotter that was driven by an IBM reproducing card machine. That
summer, I generated simple plots of mathematical formulas. From then
on, I was hooked on graphics and have spent the last 40 years in the
field. In 1968 I joined the Arsenal as a full-time, Research
Mathematician and spent the next ten years building expertise in
computer graphics, numerical analysis and scientific
programming. These were the early days of computer science and most
everything was learned on the job.

In 1978, I started my second (and final) job at GE's Corporate Research and Development Center (CRD). Initially, I worked in the
central computer organization doing contract programming for CRD
scientists. I sensed that the then-emerging field of computer graphics
would have an impact on all of GE’s businesses and worked to introduce
state-of-the-art computer graphics technology into the research lab
and the company. In a short time I was able to establish my own
research projects. I did research in 3D medical imaging, molecular
modelling, scientific visualization and object-oriented software as it
applied to computer animation.

My GE career has been technically and financially rewarding. An
industrial research lab sits somewhere between an academic position
and an advanced engineering position. On the one hand we have
difficult problems posed by the Company. On the other hand, we have
the luxury of time to think and invent new technology. The demands of
doing research and producing usable results are always challenging.

In fact, most careers (and much of life) involves trade-offs: family
versus work, research versus products, employer demands versus
personal development. A successful career balances the trade-offs.

The most rewarding part of my career has been the personal
relationships that I have made within the Company and in the external
community. These relationships, more than anything else, made me a
successful researcher and a valuable employee.

Recently when I was asked in a GE interview,
"What’s the best advice to give an early career researcher at GE Global Research?”
My reply,
“Establish yourself technically both within and outside the Company. Find others who share your interests and work with them regardless of where they sit in the organization. Become active in professional organizations like the IEEE or ASME. Attend the society meetings, work on committees, review papers. The external exposure is great for you and the Company.”

I retired from GE Research in January 2007, after 29 years.

According to Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby_boomer), I am in the first batch of the baby boomers (born in 1946). I had a great career, with a great company. Now, my wife (since January 1968) Terri and I spend more time together, travelling and completing the many projects we've started or dreamed about for years.

Technically, I remain active in the Open Source Community (vtk, itk, Slicer). I also serve on several advisory boards and will continue to contribute to them as long as they and I benefit from my involvement.
Also, I keep busy with projects around the house.
